Thor steps forth from the clouds, ready to unleash his anger. Lightning ignites the sky. Originally painted in oils on gesso board in 2004, as a portrait for a friend.
Thor, god of thunder, protected humans and the other gods from the giants and who was especially popular among the Norse peasantry. He would smash giant’s heads with his mighty axe-hammer, Mjolnir. To wield this awesome weapon he needed iron gloves and a belt of strength. Mjolnir would return to Thor’s hand after being thrown and is symbolic of lightning. Thor was very well-known for his quick and hot temper. Our day of the week, Thursday, is named for him.
