Storm Clouds Gather

This painting is inspired by a Norse deity associated with the sky, Frigga, who was said to weave the clouds. Frigg (or Frigga) is the wife of Odin and mother of Baldur in Norse mythology, and the “foremost among the goddesses”. She is the queen of Asgard, and the patron of marriage and motherhood, and the goddess of love and fertility. In that aspect she shows many similarities with Freya, of whom she possibly is a different form. Both she and Freyja are said to weep and to be able to transform into a falcon. Frigga is also described as having the power of prophecy yet she does not reveal what she knows, and Frigg is the only one other than Odin who is permitted to sit on his high seat Hlidskjalf and look out over the universe. Frigga’s name means “love” or “beloved one”

This painting was original created using oils on gesso board, finished in 2004. It is meant to be a companion piece to Thor.
