Ophelia's Last Breath
Shakespeare’s Ophelia takes one last longing look over her shoulder toward the castle where Hamlet still resides feigning insanity and spurning her love. Although Hamlet’s madness be simply a performance, his behavior toward Ophelia, his cruelty to be kind, ultimately drives her to the brink. Her last thoughts are of the one she loved, the dashed hopes of her future’s promise, and possibly the flowers most fitting for her grave. Simply wanting the pain to end, she takes one last breath before surrendering to the water grave that awaits.
